Zelenskyy To Offer Security Guarantees To Russia
To secure peace “without delay”, Ukraine could offer security guarantees to Russia declaring neutrality. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the war could only end with face-to-face meetings with Russian leaders. Zelenskyy said his priority is to ensure “territorial integration” of Ukraine and its Sovereignty. He said while giving an interview to independent Russian media outlets,
However, Zelenskyy further said, “Security guarantees and Neutrality, non- nuclear status of our state – we are ready to go for it.” Russia, on the other side, has long hoped of Ukraine not joining the NATO alliance.
Referendum will decide neutrality of Ukraine
On the question of neutrality, Zelenskyy said, that it would be decided by Ukrainian citizens through the process of referendum. But only after Russian troops withdraw.
If Ukraine decided to go for neutrality in order to sustain peace, it could not join the NATO alliance or any sort of military alliance. Zelenskyy also pointed out that Ukraine also need security guarantees for the same. “we must come to an agreement with the president of Russian Federation and in order to reach an agreement, he needs to get out of there on his own feet…and come to meet me.”
Afterwards, Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov said that the two presidents could only meet after the negotiations on key elements of the deal – “The meeting is necessary once we have clearity regarding solutions on all key issue.”
